What if I lose my device?
2 Oct 2026
If you still have another device, pair the new one from it, which is how a second device gets its keys in the first place. Then remove the lost one under Settings, which stops it reading or sending your mail.
If it was your only device, your encrypted backup file lets a new device ask to join. It can open your mail after a waiting period, a week on dmcn.email, and any device still on your account can cancel the request in that time.
If you have neither another device nor a backup, the mail is gone. Organisations on a managed domain have an administrator holding account keys by design and can get you back in; for individuals there is nothing equivalent yet, and we do not want to be the custodian of anyone's keys.
So do not make this the only copy of something you cannot afford to lose.
What is genuinely unrecoverable What is genuinely unrecoverable If every device holding your keys is gone and you made no backup, nobody can recover the mail in that mailbox. Not us. Not with a court order. Not with your permission. The keys were never anywhere else.We cannot move the address to a new key for you either. We have no safe way to tell you apart from someone claiming to be you, and a recovery that anyone could talk us into would be a way in for them. This is the objection that killed consumer PGP and we are not going to pretend it away. The mitigations are real: pair a second device while you still have one, and export an encrypted backup file and keep it somewhere that is not your laptop.
